Teaching in the Metaverse – An interactive study session // March 12, 2022 (Online)
As teachers, we need to keep up with the changes, anticipating the challenges and needs our students will have to face in a world that is yet to come. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many to move their teaching setting from the classroom to the Internet, starting a golden age for video conference apps like Zoom. More recently, however, the term metaverse has gained traction, also following “The Facebook Company” rebranding into “Meta”. But this is just a new entry in an already extensive list of metaverse-focused platforms. With many of them now offering premium plans designed specifically for schools and teachers, it is time to look into this with an open but investigative mind.
The purpose of this event is to spark meaningful discussion on the topic of metaverse for educational purposes. Attendees will get to explore first-hand the reality of these “virtual worlds” the same way students would in an online/hybrid setting. This interactive lesson will include self-intro activities, pair and group work in breakout rooms, but also self-study opportunities.
As a study session, at the end of class, we will all then gather to discuss what the metaverse can offer, possible challenges, and teaching opportunities at different educational levels.
WHEN: March 12, 2022 (Saturday) @10:30am
The event will be hosted on a metaverse platform called Gather.Town. Due to the nature of the event, we DO NOT recommend using mobile devices as they still have limited support. A desktop / laptop device with an updated web browser (Chrome and Safari are recommended) is all you need.
